Athenspets is an all-volunteer group that cares about the pets in our community and the people who care for them. We are dedicated to helping our shelter pets find permanent homes or rescue placements and to reducing pet overpopulation in the Athens area.

Athenspets works closely with Athens-Clarke County Animal Control and local rescue groups to help them help our shelter animals. Our projects include:

  • Maintaining the Athenspets website with photos, videos, and bios of the shelter’s adoptable pets and publicizing them on social media;
  • Covering the necessary non-routine veterinary costs of the shelter animals;
  • Purchasing high quality food for shelter animals with special dietary needs;
  • Soliciting sponsorships for individual pets to attract rescue groups;
  • Providing mental stimulation and exercise for the shelter animals so they stay healthy and happy while they await their homes;
  • Spaying & neutering shelter pets to improve their chances of adoption or rescue and community pets otherwise at high risk of adding to pet overpopulation in our area; and
  • Testing shelter dogs for heartworms and providing preventative, sponsorship, or treatment, as appropriate.
